Managing and Leading a Youth Orchestra*
Directing a youth orchestra, whether as an executive director, music director, operations director, or as part of a team, involves all the skills necessary in an adult orchestra…and then some. This seminar will explore recruitment, retention, working with parents and adolescents, maximizing rehearsal time, programming, and much more. An executive director/music director/operations director team will work with you from both the administrative and artistic perspective to insure that your youth orchestra is run on the highest professional level, while retaining the excitement, passion, and spontaneity unique to the population it serves.

Community Engagement: What Does It Really Mean?*
Our orchestras can, and should, be fully engaged members of our communities. What does this really mean, and what is the skill set required to establish and maintain meaningful relationships with all segments of our communities? How do we build respectful relationships that honor our own strengths and limitations and those of our potential partners? What are the requirements of stewardship necessary to sustain the work over time? And what do the qualities of successful partnership have to teach us about our own internal orchestra cultures?

Teaching Artistry*
Explore the attitudes, skills, and approaches that lead to success in an educational context – whether in a school setting, at a donor event, in the community, or in any other setting that draws on skills beyond performance alone. David Wallace, violist, teaching artist, and author of Reaching Out: A Musician’s Guide to Interactive Performance, and Sarah Johnson, oboist, teaching artist, and director of education at The Philadelphia Orchestra, will lead a hands-on workshop that will grow your skill, aptitude, and passion for teaching artistry.
